Aviation Business Administration
Additional Program Highlights
Without effective communication, the aviation industry would not function. This section of your program will convey the importance of understanding how the various organizations within the aviation field communicate.
You will be provided with an overview of the national Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, including basic air traffic control procedures, navigation, approach control, towers, and radar operations. Students will also engage in studies of aviation communication technologies, such as the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), Global Positioning Satellite System (GPSS), and Airport Surface Detection Equipment.
To stay competitive in this industry, you will need a solid foundation in the fundamentals of aviation management.
Utilization of a simulation tool will provide you with insight into the vital aspects underlying the successful management of airport operations, including those of regional, point-to-point, and network carriers. Instruction will also cover subjects such as business strategies, human resource development methods, asset management skills, and marketing techniques. Demonstrating these skills will be through the development and presentation of a business plan, which will encompass the effective management of people, information, and resources.
During this part of your program, you will learn how to apply knowledge toward managing finances within the aviation industry.
The basics of accounting principles will include study of transaction analysis, posting, journalizing, preparing trial balances and financial statements, monitoring inventory, and closing the accounting cycle. Real-world application of payroll procedures, managing and assessing a company’s financial statements, and keeping accurate financial records will be practiced through using accounting software. You will be also equipped with knowledge of employee earning records, registers, deductions, and laws surrounding Social Security and Disability – gaining experience through completing both manual and computerized payroll procedures.
Students will explore specific legal and ethical considerations about the industry, including getting insight into the development of aviation laws, the enforcement actions of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and issues surrounding aircraft ownership.
You will examine criminal, contract, and international aviation laws. Past and present ethical concerns surrounding aerospace companies will be presented for discussion. Using actual case studies, students will conduct research and form arguments toward developing their own responses to the legal and ethical issues affecting the aviation industry today.
Every successful manager understands the value of solid organizational skills. During these courses, you will be examining organizational behavior as it applies to both established and start-up businesses.
Theories of effective principles and structures will be applied in the context of workplace culture. You will learn about franchising, partnerships, intellectual property rights, and understand the importance of both individuals and groups as roles within the organizational structure. For your Capstone project, you will demonstrate your abilities by applying the knowledge you have gained through researching, analyzing, and presenting viable solutions for issues that are central to successful business operations.
Career Outlook
Aside from pilots, the aviation industry also needs properly trained aviation professionals to manage airports, airlines, fixed based operators, flight schools, and aircraft manufacturing facilities. Those who successfully graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Business Administration can be trained for a variety of administrator positions in several aviation areas. Graduates of this program will be well prepared for entry-level supervisory or managerial positions, including positions such as transportation managers, traffic manager, director of operations or an airfield operations specialist.
