Demonstrating their skill, professionalism, and sportsmanship on a national stage, the California Aeronautical University (CAU) Flight Team recently competed at the 2025 National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) SAFECON flight competition, earning national honors among the country’s top collegiate aviation programs.
Competing May 12-17, 2025 in Oshkosh Wisconsin, the CAU Flight Team proudly placed 14th overall, bringing national attention to the school’s aviation training program.
The team was also honored with the Team Sportsmanship Award, a recognition voted on by fellow competitors that reflects the team’s positive attitude, camaraderie, and respect both in and out of competition.
Adding to the team’s success, flight team member Savannah Coffia earned 1st place in the Power-Off Landing competition, standing out among more than 130 students – showcasing her exceptional precision and piloting skills.
Other honors include: James Lopez and Black Demoff – 10th place in the Unlimited Navigation Event, William Roeber – 11th place in Preflight Inspection, and Matthew Anderson and James Lopez – 15th in the Crew Resource Management event.
“Earning a bid to the national SAFECON competition is already a tremendous achievement,” said Matthew Johnston. To place in the top 15, win the Sportsmanship Award, and have a team member finish 1st in a major event is a testament to the team’s hard work, talent and dedication. We couldn’t be more proud.”
SAFECON, Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference, is an annual competition consisting of flight and ground challenges designed to promote safety and professionalism among collegiate aviators.
California Aeronautical University’s participation at the national level highlights the strength of its aviation programs and its continued commitment to training the next generation of safe, skilled, and successful pilots.
