CAU Flies to a Greener Future with Unleaded Aviation Fuel

California Aeronautical University (CAU) is propelling forward with exciting new developments that aim to reshape the landscape of a more environmentally friendly aviation and education. With a commitment to innovation, CAU is spearheading initiatives that not only enhance the learning experience for students but also contribute to the advancement of the aviation industry.

One of the most significant strides made by CAU is its pioneering unleaded fuel initiative. Recognizing the environmental impact of traditional aviation fuels, the University has agreed to be General Aviation Modifications Inc.’s (GAMI) launch volume customer for G100UL, an unleaded 100-octane aviation fuel.

Leaded vs Unleaded Aviation Fuel

As an alternative to 100LL leaded aviation fuel, G100UL is a key component to a less pollutant future in aviation as it results in a cleaner fuel burn and reduced aircraft maintenance. G100UL received FAA supplemental type certificate (STC) approval in 2022 and has proven that it is an effective and safe replacement.

To showcase its investment in general aviation’s safe and smart transition to unleaded fuel, CAU received FAA approval (STC) and joined AOPA in a special demonstration at the Buckey AirFair where CAU President flew the University’s Beechcraft Baron with G100UL fuel from GAMI.

This initiative not only reduces harmful lead emissions in the aviation industry but also demonstrates CAU’s dedication to mitigating its carbon footprint and promoting a greener and cleaner future for aviation. As some states ban leaded aviation fuel altogether, CAU understands the move towards unleaded fuel is the future of aviation and is setting a new standard for environmental stewardship and innovation within the aviation community.

In addition to its unleaded fuel initiative, the University also recently announced the expansion of its fleet with the addition of 15 Cessna Skyhawk aircraft. This strategic investment not only enhances the University’s capacity to meet growing demand for flight training but also ensures that students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology.

In a joint statement, Textron Aviation’s Vice President of Piston Sales, Chris Crow, commented, “for more than six decades, the Skyhawk has been at the forefront of innovation, empowering aspiring pilots and setting new standards in flight training. We are delighted to continue inspiring the journey of flight by providing California Aeronautical University students access to the most produced single-engine aircraft globally.”

The additional aircraft will also help maintain an optimal student-to-aircraft ratio at the University, enabling students to begin flying in their first term and maintaining consistent aircraft availability throughout the entire duration of their training.

The introduction of these newly acquired aircraft reflects CAU’s ongoing efforts to stay at the forefront of aviation education and training and its investment to meet the needs of its students.

By embracing cleaner fuels and investing in new aircraft, CAU is paving the way for a more environmentally friendly and prosperous future for aviation education and training.
